The Elder’s Calling: Ordained by the Spirit

Biblical Foundation for Eldership

  • Acts 20:28 – “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”
  • 1 Peter 5:2–3 – “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
  • Ephesians 4:11–12 – Elders are given to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”
  • Hebrews 13:17 – Elders will give account for their leadership as shepherds.
    • Reflection questions:
      • How does Scripture’s description of elders compare with our current practice?
      • In what ways do you feel already equipped for this calling?
      • Where do you sense God inviting you to stretch or grow?

The elder’s role is not passive but Spirit-filled shepherding and equipping.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean that the Holy Spirit placed you here?
  2. Which of the Six Pillars resonates most with your calling?
  3. Who could you begin mentoring?
