1. Tehillim — תְּהִלִּים — “Praises”

Though many psalms are laments, the entire collection is called “Praises” — pointing to the ultimate triumph of God’s people.

2. Ashrei — אַשְׁרֵי — “Blessed / happy / flourishing”

The first word of the Psalms — describing the righteous life.

Psalm 2 sets the tone for the entire book — God’s chosen King.

Psalm 19 celebrates Torah as perfect, reviving the soul.

5. Ro’i — רֹעִי — “My Shepherd”

From Psalm 23 — one of the most intimate names for God.

🌿 Messianic Connection

The first book of Psalms contains some of the clearest Messianic prophecies in all Scripture.

1. Psalm 2 — Messiah the King

Nations rebel, but God enthrones His Son.
The New Testament quotes this repeatedly for Yeshua.

2. Psalm 16 — The Holy One will not see decay

Peter and Paul both apply this to Messiah’s resurrection.

3. Psalm 22 — The suffering Messiah

“My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?”
This psalm foreshadows the crucifixion in startling detail.

4. Psalm 23 — Messiah as our Shepherd

Yeshua identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd (John 10).

5. Psalm 40 — “Behold, I come to do Your will”

Hebrews 10 quotes this psalm to describe Messiah’s obedience unto death.

6. Psalm 41 — Betrayed by a close friend

Foreshadows Judas (John 13:18).

7. David as template for Messiah

David’s prayers — suffering, trust, kingship, obedience — become the pattern fulfilled in Messiah.

🌿 Moral and Spiritual Application

1. The righteous delight in God’s Word (Psalm 1).

Walking with God begins with meditating on His Torah.

2. God’s King reigns even when nations rebel (Psalm 2).

Messiah is secure, unshaken, victorious.

3. God hears honest prayer.

Many psalms begin in despair and end in praise.

4. Creation and Torah reveal God’s glory (Psalm 19).

Study of Scripture and creation deepens faith.

5. Trust is formed in suffering.

David’s laments teach us how to walk with God in pain.

6. God is your Shepherd — not just your King.

Psalm 23 offers comfort, guidance, restoration, protection.

7. Confession leads to joy (Psalm 32).

Repentance leads to freedom.
