Main Reading: Genesis 6:9–11:32
Theme: Obedience and Covenant Grace
Messianic Focus: Yeshua as the Ark of Salvation
🌿 Overview
The Torah describes Noah as:
נֹחַ — Noach
- Pronounced: NO-akh
- Meaning: “Rest / comfort”
Noach is a man who walks with God while the world around him collapses into corruption and violence.
His obedience becomes the bridge between God’s judgment and God’s mercy.
When the world fills with wickedness, God brings cleansing through the flood — yet preserves His creation through one righteous man who finds grace (חֵן — chen) in His eyes.
Hebrew learning note:
Chen (חֵן)
- Pronounced: khen (the kh is the same soft throat sound as in “Bach”)
- Meaning: grace, favor, graciousness
Noach’s story teaches that salvation is always an act of God’s grace — received through faithful obedience.

🌿 Hebrew Notes (Integrated)
1. Noach — נֹחַ — “Rest, comfort”
God brings rest to creation through the obedience of Noach.
This foreshadows Messiah’s invitation: “I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
2. Teivah — תֵּבָה — “Ark / vessel”
- Pronounced: Tay-VAH
Interestingly, the same word is used for Moses’ basket — both vessels of salvation.
3. Chen — חֵן — “Grace, favor”
- Pronounced: Khen
Noach “finds grace” before any law or ritual is given.
Grace is God’s gift from the beginning.
4. Berit — בְּרִית — “Covenant”
- Pronounced: Breet
God establishes His covenant with Noach after the flood, promising never again to destroy all life by water.
5. Keshet — קֶשֶׁת — “Bow / rainbow”
- Pronounced: KEH-shet
The rainbow is a sign of covenant mercy.
🌿 Messianic Connection
The ark (teivah) is one of the clearest pictures of Messiah in the Torah:
- One door → Yeshua: “I am the door.” (John 10:9)
- All inside are saved → Salvation is by entering into Messiah.
- Covered inside and out with sealing pitch → The Hebrew root kaphar (“to cover”) is the same root for atonement.
- Judgment passes over those inside → Messiah shields us from wrath.
The flood narrative teaches both the seriousness of sin and the overwhelming mercy of God.
🌿 Moral and Spiritual Application
- Walk with God even when the world rejects Him.
- Obedience is the fruit of grace, not the cause of it.
- Prepare your life like Noah prepared the ark — with reverent obedience.
- Resist the patterns of corruption around you.
- Trust in God’s covenant faithfulness.
