SEXUAL PURITY — BESTIALITY

Defilement, Disorder, and Violation of Creation Boundaries

(Exod. 22:19; Lev. 18:23; Lev. 20:15–16)

🌿 INTRODUCTION

Bestiality—sexual relations between a human and an animal—is one of the clearest and most severely condemned sexual sins in Torah.
It is universally rejected:

  • in the Torah
  • in the Prophets
  • in the Apostolic writings
  • in ancient Israel
  • in the early church
  • in all cultures that preserve human dignity

This sin violates both holiness and creation order, corrupting the image of God and defiling the body in profound ways.

✡️ 1. Connection to the Ten Commandments

Bestiality violates several of the Ten Words:

7 — Do not commit adultery

Because it violates covenant sexual boundaries meant only for humans within marriage.

6 — Do not murder

Bestiality destroys human dignity and defiles the body/soul, which Scripture treats as a form of violence.

1 — No other gods

In the ancient Near East, bestiality was often tied to ritual worship of fertility gods.

10 — Do not covet

Desire for unnatural sexual relations is covetous, disordered desire.

✡️ 2. Torah Category: Chukim (Holiness Statutes)

Bestiality is listed in the same holiness code (Lev. 18–20) that forbids:

  • incest
  • adultery
  • homosexuality

It is considered a severe defilement of the land and the body.

✡️ 3. Torah Statutes (Exhaustive)

A. Exodus 22:19

“Whoever lies with an animal must be put to death.”

Strongest language possible—this sin corrupts identity at the deepest level.

B. Leviticus 18:23

“Do not have sexual relations with an animal…”

This is placed alongside incest, adultery, and homosexuality, with the same moral weight.

C. Leviticus 20:15–16

Specifies judgment for both the human and the animal.
This is about cleansing the defilement of the community.

✡️ 4. Why Torah Prohibits Bestiality — Theological & Moral Meaning

A. It violates creation order

Sexual boundaries were created for:

  • humans
  • in covenant
  • in male–female union
  • in the image of God

Crossing species corrupts creation roles and order.

B. It dehumanizes the person

Humans bear God’s image.
Animals do not.

This sin destroys the dignity God gave His creation.

C. It often involves domination and violence

Bestiality is inherently abusive—
animals cannot consent, and the act is intrinsically coercive.

D. It was part of pagan worship

Many fertility cults included zoophilic rituals.

Israel must not imitate the nations (Lev. 18:3).

E. It defiles the land

Lev. 18 repeatedly says these acts “defile the land,”
bringing judgment if normalized.

✡️ 5. Yeshua’s Teaching

Yeshua does not address bestiality directly (for the same reason He does not address incest or child sacrifice specifically)—
Jews universally accepted the Levitical sexual laws.

Yet He indirectly reinforces the Torah position:

✔ He upholds creation order

Matt. 19:4–6 — “male and female… the two become one flesh.”

✔ He condemns sexual immorality broadly

Mark 7:21–23 — porneia (“sexual sins”) encompasses all Levitical sexual violations.

✔ He affirms purity of heart

Matt. 5:27–30 — sexual desire must align with God’s design.

✔ He restores dignity to the defiled

John 4, John 8 — Yeshua heals the sexually broken, offering redemption.

✡️ 6. New Covenant Application

A. Sexual immorality includes all unnatural acts

The Greek term πορνεία — porneia used in:

  • Acts 15
  • 1 Thess. 4
  • 1 Cor. 6
  • Eph. 5
  • Rev. 2–3

includes every sexual act outside male–female covenant.
This is the same category that included bestiality in Jewish thought.

B. God’s people must pursue purity

1 Thess. 4:3 — “This is God’s will: your sanctification.”

C. The body belongs to the Lord

1 Cor. 6:19–20 — our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

D. Freedom is possible through the Spirit

1 Cor. 6:11 — “such WERE some of you… but you were washed.”

Some ancient cultures normalized bestiality—
the early church ministered to people leaving those practices through the power of Christ.

✡️ 7. Discipleship Insights

A. The issue is identity destruction

Bestiality attacks the image of God in a person.
Purity preserves dignity and holiness.

B. Sin disintegrates boundaries; holiness restores them

The Spirit rebuilds moral boundaries damaged by sin.

C. Healing is possible

Even people with severe sexual trauma or brokenness can be restored in Messiah.

D. Sexual purity is a fruit of spiritual transformation

Purity rises from:

  • renewed mind
  • transformed desires
  • healed wounds
  • identity in Christ

✡️ 8. Restoration Path (Pastoral Care)

For a person trapped in severe sexual sin or trauma-related patterns:

A. Safety first

If animals or people are in danger, authorities and professionals must be involved.

B. Confession and renunciation

Real freedom begins with bringing sin into the light.

C. Trauma-informed counseling

Many who fall into bestiality have suffered:

  • childhood trauma
  • abuse
  • isolation
  • early exposure to distorted sexuality

D. Spiritual cleansing and renewal

Inner healing ministries help restore spiritual and emotional purity.

E. Long-term discipleship

Freedom is a process:

  • accountability
  • community
  • mentoring
  • Scripture formation
  • identity work

F. Clear boundaries

Not isolation—but boundaries designed for healing.

No shame; only redemption with wisdom.

✡️ SUMMARY OF BESTIALITY

Torah condemns bestiality because it violates creation order, destroys human dignity, defiles the land, and was entangled with pagan worship.
Yeshua upholds creation’s boundaries and calls His followers to purity of heart, mind, and body.
The New Covenant shows that profound transformation is possible through repentance, community, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Sexual purity is not merely an avoidance of sin—
it is the restoration of the image of God in us.
